How to Store Whiskey: 5 Mistakes to Avoid
A fine bottle of whiskey deserves the right storage to keep it tasting just as the distiller intended. Yet, a few common mistakes can affect the flavour and quality over time. Here are a few essential tips to help you store your whiskey bottle (or future bottle) properly.
1. Storing Whiskey on Its Side
Unlike wine, whiskey should always be stored upright. Why? Because whiskey’s high alcohol content can break down the cork over time, leading to contamination. A damaged cork can also allow too much air into the bottle, which speeds up oxidation and alters the flavour.
Keep those bottles standing tall, and your whiskey will thank you.
2. Leaving Whiskey in Direct Sunlight
Whiskey and sunlight don’t mix well. UV rays can degrade the liquid inside, causing unpleasant changes in taste and colour. If your whiskey collection is displayed on an open shelf near a window, it’s time to rethink its location.
A dark cabinet or a whiskey shelf away from direct light will help preserve its character.
3. Storing Whiskey at Inconsistent Temperatures
Temperature fluctuations can cause whiskey to expand and contract inside the bottle, which affects the seal and speeds up oxidation. Ideally, store your bottles at a consistent temperature - somewhere between 15-20°C (59-68°F).
Avoid keeping them near radiators, kitchen stoves, or anywhere prone to temperature swings.
4. Forgetting to Keep the Cork Moist
Whiskey bottles stand upright, but that doesn’t mean you can forget about the cork. Over time, a dry cork can shrink, letting air into the bottle and ruining the whiskey. The fix? Every so often, tilt the bottle slightly to wet the cork. This helps maintain a proper seal and keeps your whiskey tasting fresh.
5. Storing Whiskey in the Freezer
Chilling whiskey might seem like a great idea, but storing it in the freezer can mute its rich flavours and aromas. Cold temperatures also cause some compounds to separate, altering the whiskey’s appearance. Instead, keep it at room temperature and chill your glass or use whiskey stones if you prefer a cooler sip.
A little attention to how you store your whiskey goes a long way in preserving its quality. Keep your bottles upright, away from sunlight, and at a steady temperature, and you’ll always have the perfect pour waiting for you.
