Why International Irish Whiskey Day Is Celebrated on March 3rd

Every year on March 3rd, whiskey lovers celebrate International Irish Whiskey Day, a day dedicated specifically to Ireland’s most famous spirit. While there is also a broader International Whiskey Day celebrated later in the month on March 28th, the March 3rd celebration focuses entirely on Irish whiskey and what makes it unique.

But the date itself isn’t random, it’s actually a clever nod to two defining characteristics of Irish whiskey.

The Meaning Behind March 3rd

The date 3/3 (March 3rd) represents two of the most recognisable traditions in Irish whiskey production:

Triple Distillation

Most Irish whiskeys are triple distilled, a process where the spirit is distilled three times rather than the more common double distillation used in many other whiskey styles.

This extra distillation typically produces a smoother, lighter, and more approachable spirit, which is one of the hallmarks of Irish whiskey.

Three Years of Aging

By law, to be classified as Irish whiskey, the spirit must be aged for a minimum of three years in wooden casks. This aging process allows the whiskey to develop its flavour, colour, and character before it can be bottled and enjoyed.

Because of these two “threes,” March 3rd (3/3) became the perfect symbolic date to celebrate Irish whiskey around the world.

International Irish Whiskey Day vs International Whiskey Day

It’s easy to confuse International Irish Whiskey Day with International Whiskey Day, but they are actually two different celebrations.

  • March 3rd – International Irish Whiskey Day
A celebration of Irish whiskey, its traditions, and its unique production style.

  • March 28th – International Whiskey Day
A global celebration of all whiskey styles including Scotch, Bourbon, Japanese whiskey, and Irish whiskey.

Together, these two days give whiskey lovers plenty of reasons to pour a dram in March.

Celebrating Irish Whiskey

Ireland has one of the oldest whiskey traditions in the world, and today Irish whiskey is enjoying a remarkable global revival. Distilleries across the country are producing a wide variety of styles, from classic blends to single pot still whiskeys.

International Irish Whiskey Day is the perfect excuse to explore the category, whether that means:

  • Trying a new Irish whiskey

  • Visiting a whiskey tasting

  • Learning about the distillation process

  • Or simply enjoying a dram with friends

However you celebrate, March 3rd is a day dedicated to Ireland’s smooth, triple-distilled spirit and the centuries of craft behind it. Check out our collection of Irish Whiskey at The Whiskey Reserve to get in the spirit!
